How God Changes Us from the Inside Out
We All Long for Change
Most of us can think of something we’d like to change about ourselves. Maybe we’d like to be more patient, less anxious, more consistent in our faith, more adventurous or less easily frustrated. We all have hopes and dreams about the kind of person we want to become.
Yet busyness, distraction and a lack of clarity about how to change can weigh us down. The days become weeks, the weeks become months, and before we know it, very little has changed.
Why do so many of our good intentions fail to become lasting change?
One of the most important things to understand is that change is a process, not an event. Interestingly, psychologists describe change as moving through stages. We become aware that something needs to change, begin to consider it, prepare for it, take action, and then learn how to sustain it. We don’t always move neatly from one stage to the next. We often take a few steps forward before slipping back. The encouraging news is that God is patient with us. He isn’t looking for perfection but for hearts that keep turning back to Him. Change is rarely a straight line.

For any meaningful change to take place, several things usually need to happen. First, we become aware that something needs to change. I need to change. Then comes motivation. Why do I want to change? Finally, there is preparation. How am I going to change?
Real change takes time, thought and intention. Yet many of us live at such a relentless pace that we rarely stop long enough to reflect on the lives we’re living, let alone the lives we long to live. Without space to think, pray and listen, even our best intentions soon get swallowed up by everyday life.
Every change begins with a decision, and every decision begins in our thinking. Our minds are incredibly powerful, yet they’re rarely still. The moment we begin to consider doing something different, our minds often present us with a list of reasons why it won’t work. You don’t have time. You’re too old. You’re too busy. You’ll never keep it up.
Have you noticed how quickly those excuses appear the moment you begin to think about changing?
Real Change Begins with God

When it comes to following Jesus, the same principles still apply. We may long to know God more deeply, become more like Jesus, or experience greater peace and freedom. But spiritual transformation doesn’t happen simply because we want it to. Nor does it happen by trying harder.
Paul understood that lasting transformation begins with a renewed mind. That’s why he wrote:
“Stop imitating the ideals and opinions of the culture around you, but be inwardly transformed by the Holy Spirit through a total reformation of how you think. This will empower you as you live a beautiful life, satisfying and perfect in his eyes.”
Romans 12:2 (TPT)
"Notice that Paul doesn't tell us to transform ourselves. He tells us to be transformed."
God is the One who changes us. Transformation is His work. He has always been far more interested in our hearts than simply modifying our behaviour. Our role is to remain available to God’s work; His role is to bring about the transformation.
Perhaps the greatest change we can make is choosing to build our lives around God—to know Him more deeply, discover the depth of His love, and trust that His plans are better than our own. Knowing that we are fully seen, completely known and deeply loved changes everything.
"Real change begins, not by trying harder, but by making space for God to meet with us."
Making Space for Transformation
Over the years I’ve recognised many times that something in my life needs to change. I’ve also learnt that building my life around God takes intention. Things do not simply change because I wish they would.
Every day I choose to respond to Jesus’ invitation to “Follow me.” I try to build small moments into my day that help me re-centre my thoughts on Him and create space for Him to work in my heart.
Over the years I’ve come to think about this journey using a simple acronym. It’s not a formula, but it helps me remember some of the ways God shapes us over time.
The CHANGE Journey
C — Create Space
Transformation begins by creating space for God. If every moment of our lives is filled with noise, hurry and distraction, it’s difficult to hear His voice. Whether it’s five minutes with a cup of coffee, a walk in the countryside, sitting quietly with the Bible or simply pausing to pray, change begins when we intentionally make room for God.
H — Habits
Lasting change is built through small, sustainable habits rather than occasional bursts of enthusiasm. As we regularly read the Bible, pray, practise silence and solitude, worship and reflect, we gradually build rhythms that keep drawing us back to God’s presence.
A — Adjust Your Thinking
As we spend time with God, He gently reshapes the way we think. We begin to see Him more clearly, ourselves more honestly, and other people more graciously. We slowly exchange fear for trust, distraction for His presence and lies for truth.
N — Nearness
It is God’s nearness that our hearts long for. We were created for relationship with Him. As we draw near to God, we discover that He has been drawing near to us all along. In His presence we find the peace, strength and wisdom we need for the journey of change.
G — Grow
Every small step of obedience becomes another reminder of God’s faithfulness. As we experience His presence, our confidence grows. What once felt difficult slowly becomes more natural, not because we’ve become stronger, but because we’ve learnt to depend on Him.

E — Experience
Change is not something we achieve once and then move on from. It is a lifelong journey of becoming more like Jesus. As we continue to walk with Him, practising these simple rhythms, we begin to experience the quiet, lasting transformation that only He can bring.
One Small Step
This week, don’t try to change everything.
Instead, create five quiet minutes.
Sit with God. Take some time to reflect.
Ask Him:
“Lord, what is one area of my life You’re inviting me to change?”
“What is one small step I can take today?
"Lasting change rarely comes through dramatic moments. More often it grows through countless ordinary moments spent in the presence of an extraordinary God."
Jesus never said, “Try harder.”
He simply said,
“Come to me…” (Matthew 11:28)
That’s where lasting change begins.
